Art Center
The Des Moines Art Center is one of the many things we are going to miss about living in Des Moines. The museum is surprisingly good, and the best part is that it's free! It has artwork from some of my favorite artists including MirĂ³, Matisse, Rothko, Kandinsky, and even some from the likes of Picasso and Monet. I took Owen once and the workers seemed thrilled at his early introduction to art and culture. We also like to walk around the sculptures and gardens on the grounds. The roses are just starting to bloom, and there were other flowers that I thought were incredible, and huge. This sculpture is by another one of my favorite artists, Andy Goldsworthy. He uses materials found in nature such as flowers, icicles, leaves, stones and twigs to create art. Then he photographs it, and shortly after his creations usually melt, float, or blow away. He has done some more permanent work, including Three Cairns, found at the Des Moines Art Center. If you aren't familiar with his work, it's worth looking up. One of the giant flowers.

These were all as big as Owen's head...no small task.
Others were so tiny and cute.
My attempt at a group shot. Owen is clearly more interested in his straps.
